How to choose the protection level?

2024-11-19

The protection level system standard was drafted by the International Organization for Standardization IEC, which classifies electrical appliances(three phase electric motor) according to their dust and moisture resistance characteristics. The IP protection level consists of two numbers. The first number indicates the level of dust and foreign object intrusion prevention of the electrical appliance. The foreign objects referred to include tools, human fingers, etc. that cannot touch the live parts inside the electrical appliance; the second number indicates the degree of air-tightness of the electrical appliance against moisture and water intrusion. The larger the number, the higher the protection level. The most commonly used protection levels for motors are IP23, IP44 and IP54, and electric motors with different protection levels are suitable for different operating conditions.

The protection level symbol consists of the characterizing letters "IP" and the two characterizing numbers attached to the back.

The first characteristic digit indicates the protection level of the shell against people and parts inside the shell.

0-Unprotected motor No special protection No test.

1-Protection motors with solids greater than 50MM can prevent a large area of human body from accidentally touching or approaching live or rotating parts inside the shell. It can prevent solid foreign objects with a diameter greater than 50MM from entering the shell.

2-Protecting motors with solids larger than 12MM, and preventing solid foreign objects with a diameter larger than 12MM from entering the shell.

3-Protecting motors with solids larger than 2.5MM, and preventing tools or wires with a diameter larger than 2.5MM from touching or approaching live or rotating parts in the shell.

4-Protecting motors with solids larger than 1MM, and preventing wires or strips with a diameter or thickness larger than 1MM from touching or approaching live or rotating parts in the shell.

5-Dustproof motors should have no harmful effects when exposed to water splashing from any direction.

The second characterizing number indicates the level of protection against harmful effects caused by water entering the housing.

0 - Unprotected motor No special protection;

1 - Drip-proof motor Vertical dripping should have no harmful effects;

2 - 15-degree drip motor When the motor is tilted from the normal position to any angle within 15 degrees in any direction, vertical dripping should have no harmful effects;

3 - Spray-proof motor Spraying within an angle of 60 degrees from the vertical line should have no harmful effects;

4 - Splash-proof motor Splashing in any direction should have no harmful effects;

5 - Spray-proof motor Spraying in any direction should have no harmful effects;

6 - Wave-proof motor When subjected to violent wave impact or strong water spray, the amount of water entering the motor should not reach a harmful level;

7 - Flood-proof motor When the motor is immersed in water of a specified pressure for a specified time, the amount of water entering the motor should not reach a harmful level;

8 - Submersible motor The motor can be submerged for a long time under the conditions specified by the manufacturer. Motors are generally watertight, but water may enter certain types of motors, but not to a harmful degree.
